Return to a Sense of Place 2025

Course description

Space and time to come together, in-person, at last! For the lovely, brave, adventurous creative practitioners who have journeyed together on our place-based courses. Running from Saturday 6th to the 13th September from Carishader, Uig, on the Isle of Lewis. We will be using the Otter Bunkhouse as our indoor base for conversation, ceilidh-ing and cuppas and utilising the Boathouse across the road as our studio and workshop space. This retreat will comprise of a blend of indoor and outdoor activites during each day, based on participants wishes (and the weather!) and will include guided walks, mapping, and site visits as well as time for collaborative thinking, discussions and making. After a break for dinner, we will return to the bunkhouse for an informal ceilidh and on every other night we will have a special guest tutor for an informal evening together. Our Gaelic tutors comprise of visual artists, local historians and tradition barers. During these evening ceilidhs, we will hear about these artists' creative practice, local stories, customs, songs and music. As a group we will jounrey accross the week to revisit some of the themes exlored on the course and find how they are landing within your creative practice, nurturing individual ways of seeing and place-based practices. This will be time for fun, for supporting each other and learning alongside others and refilling your creative wellspring! We are offering both non-residential and residential spaces on this retreat, self-catering accomodation being offered is at the Otter bunkhouse- for more information about the accomodation available please visit www.otterbunkhouse.com Each day will run from 10am-4pm, taking a break for dinner before coming back together in the evenings from 7-9pm. All materials on the course will be provided. However feel free to bring working sketchbooks and any favourite making tools from pencils to cameras. Please bring a packed lunch each day.
