A three day course in sculpture introducing casting and carving
Course description
Form and flow Sculpture course is a balance of technical skill-based learning alongside time to play and experiment with facilitation to turn research into practice. Some of the taught skills will include drawing for sculpture, moulding, casting, carving and assemblage. Participants will be taken on guided research trips into the surrounding living landscape for inspiration, learning about Gaelic culture and ‘ways of seeing’ that inform sculptural practices, before heading into the studio for a technical lesson and being encouraged to play, experiment and make. Day one Research for Sculpture - expedition out into the landscape looking at inspiration sources and different recording methods from photographing, drawing and collecting found materials getting our eye into thinking in three dimensions and exploring form. Day two Casting - a studio day learning the technical skills to make moulds out of cold casting silicone and clays to create plaster casts. Learn which materials and methods you need to be able to play with casting different objects to capture textures and forms. Day three Carving - a studio day playing with plaster casts including those from the previous day to clean up multiples, or give from and shape to new pieces. This non-residential, Teas and coffees will be supplied, please bring a packed lunch and snacks. On day one you will need good walking shoes and layers including waterproofs and a collecting bag for found objects. On days two and three please bring old clothes or an apron or coverall/boilersuit as plaster casting can be splashy and messy! All materials on the course will be provided. However feel free to bring working sketchbooks and any favourite making tools from pencils to cameras.
