Course description

Reaothart nan Ealain is offering it's first place-based creative retreat - a replenishing, guided exploration into developing and consolidating a self-reflective arts practice, embedded in place, there will be time for making, thinking, unwinding, rewilding, exploring and having fun creatively alongside likeminded peers. As a group, we will journey into the culturally significant living landscapes of Lewis, each day will be split into time outside in the landscape and time in the studio. Out in the living landscape, participants will go on immersive visits to places of unique natural beauty. You’ll hear the real stories of the places within the indigenous Gaelic culture and take inspiration from being here – experiencing mountain tops, white beaches, seams of Gneiss rock, fairy mounds and standing stones. Participants will meet local storytellers, singers, cut peats with crofters, learn from locals about bothy culture, ceilidh's and be invited to observe and record these experiences in creative ways before returning to the studio to share their findings and take them into making. As a group, we will use mixed media, from drawing and recording what we're seeing in pencil and charcoal, to making our own natural pigments and mark-making tools, we'll work at varioius sizes from pocket fieldbooks to large scale and self-directed explorations. Participants will be guided and encouraged to try out new materials and methods, to engage with others on the course and to have fun! This will be the perfect balance of wellies, wilderness, hot drinks around the peat stove, reflection, creativity and fun! This four day, non-residential course includes hot drinks, lunch and home-baking each day, with nourishing, seasonal and local produce at the heart of our catering. All dietary requirements can be catered for. Prices: To encourage the cultural development and sustainability of our local community we offer an islander discount – if you live full time and have an HS2 postcode please select the discounted price option on the pull down menu) For more information (including travel, accomodation info) and a course outline please get in touch with us by emailing info@reothart.com
